Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Experience Fulfillment.

Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can transform the way you perceive the world and overcome negative thoughts. Acceptance therapy encourages you to accept the present, have awareness of your thoughts, and then commit to taking meaningful action to bring about positive change. Here are some strategies to help you reframe your perspective and make positive changes in your life:

Identify your core values. What are the things that are most important to you? When you focus on what you truly value, it keep you aligned to your authentic self. I use a values checklist with clients to help deepen your understanding of their value system. Taking time to get to know yourself can be transformative in changing perspectives and navigating unhelpful thinking.

Learn to recognize and accept your negative thoughts. It’s important to understand that thoughts can be just that—thoughts. They are not our reality. Acknowledge these thoughts and then find ways to move past them. Using defusion is a way my clients learn to move past unhelpful thoughts.

Fusing to helpful thinking. When you find yourself experiencing unhelpful thoughts, ask yourself, are these thoughts helpful? If the answer is no, mindfully explore other thoughts that are more helpful. Take action on those thoughts. You can not “get rid” of unhelpful thoughts but you do not have to take action towards them.

Take meaningful action. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages you to take helpful actions that are consistent with your core values. Taking action can help you to stay on track and gain a sense of accomplishment.

By using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to reframe your perspective, you can start to overcome negative thoughts and take positive action towards creating a life that you truly value.
